First Birthday Party Ideas & Thoughtful Gifts for One-Year-Olds

First birthday parties are on my mind this summer with Charlotte turning three and Jack turning one! It’s wild to think how quickly life shifted from weekends filled with weddings and bachelorette parties to baptisms, toddler milestones, and children’s birthday celebrations. Now we’re fully in the toddler years, and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

We’re especially lucky that Jack has a summer first birthday, which means we can host his first birthday party at home  fingers crossed for perfect weather. There’s something extra special about celebrating a one-year-old’s birthday in your own backyard, surrounded by family, simple decor, and meaningful moments.

Today, I want to share a few thoughtful first birthday party ideas along with gift ideas for one-year-olds that parents truly appreciate.

Here’s my number one pro tip when shopping for a first birthday gift: ask the parents what the child actually needs. I absolutely love when friends and family reach out ahead of time. Before each birthday, I put together a small wish list to share it makes gift-giving so much more intentional. You could also set up a wish list and share the link, I love using Babylist, just mark for birthday. This makes it easy to do a list once and send out to friends and family.

For our kids, I tend to gravitate toward Montessori-style toys and open-ended gifts for toddlers  simple, developmentally appropriate toys that encourage imagination without overwhelming them. If someone asks, I’m always happy to suggest a gift that will truly get used long after the birthday party ends.

Of course, I’m grateful for any gift and for the time people take to celebrate with us, but I do believe asking the parents leads to more meaningful first birthday gifts and less clutter.

This year, since Charlotte received so many wonderful first birthday gifts a couple of years ago, Jack doesn’t need much in the toy department. Instead, we asked for fall clothes for toddlers practical, useful, and still fun to pick out. Clothing can be one of the best first birthday gifts, especially when it’s seasonally thoughtful.

If you’re shopping for a little one’s first birthday, here are some of my favorite first birthday gift ideas whether you’re looking for toys, clothing, or something a bit more sentimental for a one-year-old.

🎁Top 1st Birthday Gift Ideas

  • Personalized Keepsakes | Think embroidered blankets, a custom name puzzle, or a personalized storybook. These gifts become cherished mementos.
    • Petite Keep Trunk
      • Jack and Charlotte both got one of these and I’m obsessed with them. They are on the pricier side, but for each birthday my two best friends split this gift and its perfect for keeping their special memories in one place
thoughtful first birthday gift ideas for toddlers
  • Practical Clothing for the Next Season | Ask what size the child will be in the coming months. A cozy fall jacket, knit sweater, or a set of pajamas is always appreciated.

  • Montessori Toys | Wooden stacking toys, shape sorters, or push-and-pull toys help develop motor skills while encouraging independent play.
  • Instruments
    • Must have, music is such a huge tool with kids, introduce it early!
  • Non-toxic Play Dough
    • This is my favorite playdough, its non-toxic, smells good, and lasts SO much longer than regular playdough.
  • Books They Can Grow Into | Board books for now, plus a few picture books they can enjoy as they get older. Include a sweet note inside for a personal touch.
  • Mealtime Upgrades | Silicone plates, cups, and utensils in fun colors, or a personalized placemat for their highchair.
  • Experiences | A zoo membership, baby swim lessons, or a toddler music class, gifts that create memories beyond the party.

Whether you go with something practical, sentimental, or a mix of both, the most meaningful gifts are the ones chosen with care. A little thought goes a long way especially for a milestone as sweet as turning one.

With love, always,

Maria
