First Birthday Party Ideas & Thoughtful Gifts for One-Year-Olds

First birthday parties are on my mind this summer with Charlotte turning three and Jack turning one! It’s wild to think how quickly life shifted from weekends filled with weddings and bachelorette parties to baptisms, toddler milestones, and children’s birthday celebrations. Now we’re fully in the toddler years, and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

We’re especially lucky that Jack has a summer first birthday, which means we can host his first birthday party at home  fingers crossed for perfect weather. There’s something extra special about celebrating a one-year-old’s birthday in your own backyard, surrounded by family, simple decor, and meaningful moments.

Today, I want to share a few thoughtful first birthday party ideas along with gift ideas for one-year-olds that parents truly appreciate.

Here’s my number one pro tip when shopping for a first birthday gift: ask the parents what the child actually needs. I absolutely love when friends and family reach out ahead of time. Before each birthday, I put together a small wish list to share it makes gift-giving so much more intentional. You could also set up a wish list and share the link, I love using Babylist, just mark for birthday. This makes it easy to do a list once and send out to friends and family.

For our kids, I tend to gravitate toward Montessori-style toys and open-ended gifts for toddlers  simple, developmentally appropriate toys that encourage imagination without overwhelming them. If someone asks, I’m always happy to suggest a gift that will truly get used long after the birthday party ends.

Of course, I’m grateful for any gift and for the time people take to celebrate with us, but I do believe asking the parents leads to more meaningful first birthday gifts and less clutter.
