Gift Ideas for a 2-Year-Old (From a Mom Currently Planning One!)

There is something so magical about turning two. They are not quite babies anymore, but they are just starting to develop these big little personalities and imaginations. It is such a fun age to celebrate.

For Charlotte’s second birthday, we did a “Two Scoops Are Better Than One” theme and had an ice cream truck come to the house. It was one of my favorite party decisions we’ve made. Instead of buying eight different flavors of ice cream and every topping imaginable, everyone simply ordered what they wanted. No mess, no stress, and all the fun of having an actual ice cream truck pull into your driveway.

Now we’re getting ready for Jack’s second birthday, so I’ve been deep in gift brainstorming mode. I thought it would be fun to share a few of Charlotte’s all-time favorites along with some things I have my eye on for Jack.

1. Melissa & Doug Ice Cream Counter

This is still one of the most played-with toys in our house. Years later, both kids still “make” ice cream for everyone who walks through the door.

2. Kids Piano

Music has been such a special part of our home, and my mom surprised the kids with a piano. It has gotten so much use.

One piece of advice though: maybe check with the parents before buying a giant musical instrument. Grandparents get a free pass on this one.

3. Minnie Dress Up Set

This one honestly surprised me. It is such a simple gift, but both Charlotte and Jack absolutely love it. They spend so much time pretending, dressing up, and creating little stories.

4. Story Orchestra Music Books

These books are beautiful. At two, kids are so interested in cause and effect, and pressing the buttons to hear the music play feels magical to them. As an added bonus, the music is actually lovely to listen to.

5. Dollhouse

Around two years old, you really start to see imaginative play take off. Charlotte is almost four now and still spends so much time with her dollhouse. It has easily been one of our best investments.

6. Swim Vest

Summer birthdays always make me think of pool days. I love a good swim vest, but I was looking for something a little more elevated than the typical bright character options. I found a few from Sunnylife that are adorable.

7. Play Kitchen

We actually found ours on Facebook Marketplace, and I highly recommend checking there first. There are so many families whose kids have simply outgrown theirs, and they are often in great condition.

Ours even came with a little landline phone attached. Try explaining to a toddler what that is these days.

8. Kids Vacuum

It is funny how different siblings can be. Charlotte had her favorites, but Jack is completely obsessed with our vacuum. He follows me around every time I clean and wants nothing more than to help.

I have a feeling this little toy vacuum is going to be a huge hit.

9. Bubble Wand Set & Bubble Machine

Jack also loves bubbles. Like, truly loves them.

These are the kinds of gifts that do not seem exciting when you buy them, but somehow they become the thing your child asks for every single day. I already know these will get constant use all summer long.

10. Kids Binoculars

Charlotte got a pair for Christmas, and now the two of them fight over them constantly. So this year, Jack is getting his own.

Perfect for backyard adventures, neighborhood walks, or pretending to go on safari.

11. Hot Wheels Speedway

This is one I’m especially excited about. I am quickly learning that boy toys are a whole new world for me, and I have a feeling this track is going to be one of those toys that stays out in the family room because everyone ends up playing with it.

One thing I’ve learned over the last few birthdays is that two-year-olds do not need dozens of gifts. The toys they come back to over and over are usually the ones that encourage imagination, movement, and pretending to be just like us.

And if all else fails, bring in an ice cream truck. I promise they’ll remember that one or at least your momma heart will! 🍦💕

With love, always,

Maria
